Pets and other animals have been used in various therapeutic settings to help individuals recover from many debilitating illnesses such as grief, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Have you ever wondered what happens to the actual physiology of animals when they are placed with emotionally charged individuals?  If they are affected, will their capacity to heal humans be impacted and will that result in the animal becoming prematurely ill?

petsDr. Rollin McCraty – Director of Research at the Institute of HeartMath – conducted an interesting research with his 15-year-old son Josh and his dog Mabel.  Electrocardiogram (ECG) monitors were placed on Josh and on Mabel to record heart-rhythm data.  The pair were first placed apart and then together (without any physical contact). The results from the ECG were very interesting to say the least!

From the chart below, you can see that initially when the boy and the dog were apart, their heart rhythms were distinct and unique from each other.   When Josh enters the room and begins to feel emotions of love and care towards Mabel, both their heart rhythms became similar in pattern.  There was no contact between the two during this phase of the experiment.

So what does this really mean?  Research has shown that humans, when inducing an emotion of care and love, create within themselves a biological set of events including the increase in production of anti-aging and vitality hormone DHEA.  With this experiment, we now know that animals are also able to reap the benefits from humans in whose heart is held the emotions of love, care and appreciation.

According to Dr. McCreaty  “In our work with pets and their owners, we’re seeing that a pet owner can create what we call a heart-filled environment when practicing heart-focused techniques (a cornerstone of HeartMath tools and technology). The pets respond by becoming more affectionate, more animated and more connected with the pet owner.”

In another research conducted , Dr. Dennis Thomas – a veterinarian – asked pet owners to begin to create a heart-connection with their chronically ill pets though a prescribed visualization and meditation exercise.   He noted “Every person who committed to this program told me that they witnessed great improvement in the health of their pet,” Thomas further commented. “I would see pets that were old, gray and could barely move come into the clinic looking years younger with obvious functional improvement.”

The above demonstrates how, when pet owners create a loving emotion within themselves they not only improve their health but they recharge the pet and its ability to reciprocate when the owner needs support.  Don’t forget to recharge your pet daily!  One approach is to use the Quick Coherence® technique.  For more information about how this technique can support your health and well-being, please contact us at
